The metaverse, on a philosophical level, as Mark Zuckerberg and other people have explained it, is a way for people to make their lives in the virtual world more smoothly integrated with their real-world ones.
It’ll be ‘like we are right there with other people no matter how far apart we really are, we will have the ability to express ourselves in completely immersive, new, joyful ways,’ said Mark Zuckerberg in a speech last October where he demoed his goal of the metaverse.
The concept includes creating a more immersive internet, where we will use tech such as VR (virtual reality) and AR (augmented reality) to spend our time interacting in virtual experiences and spaces instead of the physical world. The word was first coined in the 1992 science fiction book Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, but now, Mark Zuckerberg and many additional tech execs want to turn it into a reality.
A tech investor who created a string of essays on the metaverse, Mathew Ball, explained it like this:
‘Currently, the internet is mainly something that’s ‘push.’ You’re pushed data, you get an email, you get a notification, then you pull up your device in order to access it.’ So, what’s the difference with the metaverse? It is an “embodied engine” you’re ‘already within, instead of reaching out,’ Ball stated.
Essentially, it means this world is going to disengage us from our in-person realities: the outdoors, the living room, the office. Instead, we’ll plug into headsets or otherwise be immersed within some other environment.
Depending upon how you see it, it might mean an improvement to your current life; your physical appearance or surroundings may virtually be updated. Or it may be read as a dystopian idea; as if the metaverse is for those who are escaping the present negative situation of the real world (how it was envisioned within the Snow Crash novel).
Though, for now, all conversations on the metaverse are mostly hypothetical. Facebook is going to be the first one to let you know that it is still in its infancy stages.
